Hi, I'm Jack Toellner, a safety leadership coach and consultant.
Before you learn more about me and my approach to safety, I'll let you in on one important secret:
If you miss the big picture strategy, the execution details are insignificant.
Jack's Approach to Managing Safety
Improvement of safety performance starts with a conscious decision to “make safety happen”. I use the phrase “make safety happen” because if you do not consciously make it happen, it probably will not. Getting better in safety is a journey that not only requires resources, but also critical thinking, courage, trust, respect, and leadership.
While we may all understand that working safe is important, not everyone sees safety as a core value. Most of the world believes that working safe conflicts with business performance. This is completely wrong because safety is a leading indicator of business performance and those things we do to improve safety, like planning the work, communicating, and working as a team not only improves safety performance but improves every aspect of business performance. Safety performance is also an indicator of business performance in that usually if safety is not going well, then the business performance is also likely disappointing. My job is to help you understand how to improve safety performance without completely interrupting the business cycle.
My passion lies both in helping safety professionals excel in their careers and managers excel in leading safety and environmental protection. I was very fortunate to take on the right opportunity at the right time, and I turned it into both a personal career success for myself; and a safety success and business success for not just my employer, but also many of our business partners.
My success did not happen overnight, in fact it was a long journey with its share of bumps in the road. During the journey I captured lessons learned linked not just to the successes, but also the failures. This website and my consulting business is all about sharing those lessons learned in a fashion that others can use as a starting point for their own journeys in professional development, leading organizations, and improving both safety performance and business performance.
For almost thirty years, I coached professionals, managers, and senior executives in how to recognize both their individual and team potentials for improving safety and business performance. I have specialized in developing organizational strategy, executive coaching, and leading team developed solutions to the plan forward in 30+ countries around the world.
I am both a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and a registered Professional Engineer (PE- State of Texas). I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University and a Master of Public Health degree in Safety and Environmental Management from Tulane University.
